How to Apply Henna to Hair

How to use Henna & Indigo Powder to Color Hair or Beard Black

Henna & Indigo powders have been used for centuries to color hair naturally. Here's how you can do it:

Preparing Your Mixture

To get started, you'll need:

1. Henna Powder: Adds shine and reddish undertones to your hair. Gray hair will turn orange-red or copper, brown hair a reddish brown and black hair remain unchanged but conditioned and shining

2. Indigo Powder: To achieve black hair color, mix Indigo powder separately from henna.

3. Amla Powder: Add amla powder too, can be added to both henna and indigo mix. In indigo, not only will amla enhance black hair color it will condition hair and make indigo powder a smooth and easy hair paste to handle.

4. Lemon Juice (or alternatively Coffee/Tea): Use lemon juice or alternative to mix henna paste. Its acidity helps release the orange color dye from henna powder.

5. Bowl and Plastic Wrap: You'll need a non-metallic bowl for mixing and plastic wrap to cover your hair.

6. Protective Clothing and Gloves: Wear an old t-shirt or protect clothing, floor coverings and hands from staining.

Step-by-Step Application

1. Mixing: Mix Henna with lemon juice or alternative. Cover tightly with cellophane wrap or put in a plastic bag and allow to sit for a few hours or overnight. The longer the stronger the color. No need to mix out lumps thoroughly, lumps will fall out once henna rested and turn into a smooth henna paste.

2. Clean Hair: Wash your hair or beard thoroughly to remove any oils or dirt but can also be used on unwashed hair particularly if hair is course or unruly when washed.

3. Application: Apply the Henna paste evenly to your hair from root to hair ends. Don’t worry about henna on your scalp, it will condition scalp. Cover hair with plastic wrap and let it sit for 2-4 hours. The longer the more glorious the color.

4. Indigo Application: After washing out Henna, mix indigo with amla powder and apply the Indigo paste. Leave it for an hour or more for black hair. If longer than an hour up to 2 hours then you will end up with jet black hair.

5. Rinse and Dry: Rinse your hair thoroughly with water or conditioner.
It is always best advised to avoid shampoo for the next 24 hours, however a small amount of chemical-free shampoo will still retain color. Harsh chemical shampoos will strip color out more quickly.
In any event if hair pre washed, you can just wash out with conditioner. If unwashed before application then a small amount of shampoo can be used to wash out.
